CALLE introduces new street shoes

CALLE is launching its first street/casual shoe and wanted the San Diego United players, fans and coaches to get the inside scoop. The company only ordered 2,000 pairs in the world on the initial order and has pre-sold most of those to soccer shops across the country. Soccer Fanatic San Diego did bring in some pairs and is throwing a massive launch party with CALLE from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 11. From what we've heard from CALLE, it sounds like this is a prime shoe for back-to-school. It is a full-grain leather with Hypalon front and back for cutting-edge durability. The insole was made specifically for CALLE by Straat insoles, one of the world's most premium insole producers. The outsole is composed of 400d rubber, which is four times as durable as the typical indoor shoe outsole. There is an extra eyelet on the outside of each shoe so laces can be tied on the side to avoid any disturbing of the ball while playing. There are front and back directional teeth that lay beneath the surface so only the ball gets bit. The X from the pigeon eye is all over the leather and the pigeon wings even made the side of the shoe as the stripes. The shoes retail for $69.99.

Summer Camp coming in July

San Diego United’s Summer Camp schedule is out for 2009. Be sure to check out all the details on the United web site at www.sandiegounited.net. This camp is FREE for all United players and there is a $100 cost per play for all other soccer enthusiasts. The first three weeks of camp are focused on U8-14s. The fourth week is tailored different for U15-19 age groups. These players will spend time with a variety of different level college coaches. They will train with coaches who will be brought in and able to answer questions regarding their programs, and the expectations required for their soccer programs and their school’s academic requirements among other questions the players may have. Check out the web site and stay tuned to your e-mail for more information about Summer Camp!

United families to host players from England

San Diego United is hosting soccer players visiting from the United Kingdom who attend the Cheadle Hulme School (www.cheadlehulmeschool.co.uk) and are coming here to play in the Carlsbad Cup in mid-July. These male soccer players range in age from 15 to 18, and host families are still needed to accommodate them while they are in San Diego. They arrive in the morning on July 15 at Cuyamaca College for the host family to pick up. They would like to “experience” San Diego and want to do whatever it is the host family is doing. They will participate in some scrimmages on July 17 against some United teams and then will be off on the morning of July 18 to play in the Carlsbad Cup Soccer Tournament. This can be a mutually rewarding experience for both the UK player and the host family! We have 25 players who need to be placed so please consider opening up your home and be a host family for one of these athletes for a total of three nights. If you would like to be a host family, or have any questions, please contact Beth Broderick at (619) 871-2384) or e-mail brody7@cox.net.

United’s Junior Stars offers program for little feet

United’s Junior Stars is a recreational soccer program for U5-U8 players focusing on 3v3 games on 20x30 fields to ensure that every player participates fully in the game, touches the ball frequently, and learns basic skills in the process. Teams and games are organized weekly to maximize the best opportunity to succeed for each player. The program is based on dribbling, dribbling and more dribbling with a foundation of foot skills and great dribblers who can control the ball with every part of both of their little feet! The season runs from July 21 to October 31. To download a registration form, go to www.sandiegounited.net.

United Adult Indoor League starts second session

As the four United mom’s teams wrap up their first session, the United dads have decided to jump in on the fun. The dads will play on Tuesday nights and the moms on Wednesdays – all games are at the East County YMCA (behind Hooleys). These nights have become great family nights because the kids have been cheering for the parents! The next session starts in July, and United is looking to form a few more teams (cost is approximately $45 per player and these leagues are BEGINNER level but guaranteed fun!) Players do not need to be a United parent but must be at least 30 years old. Interested in joining? Interested women e-mail Rebecca Dierdorff (rdierdorff@sandiegounited.net) and men e-mail Joan Nager (jnager@continentalmills.com).

Meet the Coach – Matt Robertson, who coaches GU13 Black, GU14 White and is director of the club’s Goalkeepers.

How did you get involved in coaching? At the age of 18, I was managing and playing at the local indoor soccer park. Sami Nedjar recruited me to coach a boy’s team. Within a few weeks, I was handed a girl’s team as well. I have coached two teams every year since then.

What do you enjoy most about coaching? I love soccer and kids. Seeing a player or team grow and develop throughout the year(s) is extremely rewarding. I also really enjoy speaking with families and players, years after I coached them and knowing I had an impact on their life.

What soccer player(s) do you like to watch? As a goalkeeper, I loved to watch Peter Schmeichel. He was a beast who played for Manchester United for many years. I also enjoy watching Frank Lampard, he is a creative, simple, attacking midfielder for Chelsea and England. My favorite players are my two kids: Jacob who plays goalkeeper on United’s BU11 Black team, he has good hands and is fearless; and Jessica plays for our GU9 White team, she is a great passer and can strike the ball harder than I can.

Who is your favorite soccer team? Manchester United has been my favorite team for 18 years. At the time they had a very young team that included Giggs, Keane, Cantona, Bruce, Butt, Hughes, Scholes, Becks, etc. Several of those players are still around, and many of those that retired have moved on to coach in the English Premier league.

What is the most positive thing you have observed so far with San Diego United? The dedication to being the best. Our board is amazing. They are organized, professional and are completely dedicated to supporting our kids. The coaching staff is top-notch as well, and these individuals operate extremely well as a team. The clubs programs, college prep camp, and pro side offer a complete package so that we are a great fit for any age or ability.

What suggestions do you have for our youth soccer players? Play and watch more soccer. Get your ball, go outside and play. Juggling, street soccer, mini games, whatever. The more a player touches the ball, the more skill they will have. Find a team or player to watch and support, these days soccer is on 24/7.

Who are the most memorable players who played for you and why? What do you do in your spare time? I have coached some very gifted players. Starting from the back: Kayla Stolte was an amazing goalkeeper who saved two PKs in the State Cup final - tall, athletic, and great hands. Some defenders that stand out in my mind: Alyssa Medina, Courtney Rice, Nikole Hollis and Sarah Zepeda. One of the best midfielders I ever coached was Alyssa Loveday, you could literally build a team around her. Another mid/forward was Mercedez Ray. She was great 1v1 and scored/created some great goals. Forward: Dez Reece, she scored 4 goals in one half vs. Valhalla, seldom can a player take over a game like that.

What do you do in spare time? In my spare time I enjoy playing with my kids, and spending time with my future wife Erin.

What is your favorite food? Mexican Food (real Mexican food)

Who is a coach you have worked with in the past who has left an impression on you

and why? Several coaches have made an impact on me over the years. My first coach Jon DeVries, he taught me how to balance a practice so that it was challenging and fun. When I was younger, I went to a summer camp with George Logan. He was an amazing, patient, simple man who taught good soccer. Sami Nedjar has also been a huge part of the coach I am today, if you watch my sessions, you will find at least one exercise per practice that he has taught me. I also watch our United coaches at work, they have so many exercises to help teach the game that I often "borrow" their material, twist it a little and call it my own.

What is your favorite movie? Although I have seen The Notebook over 100 times (jk), I would have to say 300 and The Departed.

San Diego United Football Club would like to thank these generous sponsors.
