How did you get involved in coaching? At the age of 18, I was managing and playing at the local indoor soccer park. Sami Nedjar recruited me to coach a boy’s team. Within a few weeks, I was handed a girl’s team as well. I have coached two teams every year since then. What do you enjoy most about coaching? I love soccer and kids. Seeing a player or team grow and develop throughout the year(s) is extremely rewarding. I also really enjoy speaking with families and players, years after I coached them and knowing I had an impact on their life. What soccer player(s) do you like to watch? As a goalkeeper, I loved to watch Peter Schmeichel. He was a beast who played for Manchester United for many years. I also enjoy watching Frank Lampard, he is a creative, simple, attacking midfielder for Who is your favorite soccer team? Manchester United has been my favorite team for 18 years. At the time they had a very young team that included Giggs, Keane, Cantona, Bruce, Butt, Hughes, Scholes, Becks, etc. Several of those players are still around, and many of those that retired have moved on to coach in the English Premier league. What is the most positive thing you have observed so far with What suggestions do you have for our youth soccer players? Play and watch more soccer. Get your ball, go outside and play. Juggling, street soccer, mini games, whatever. The more a player touches the ball, the more skill they will have. Find a team or player to watch and support, these days soccer is on 24/7. Who are the most memorable players who played for you and why? What do you do in your spare time? I have coached some very gifted players. Starting from the back: Kayla Stolte was an amazing goalkeeper who saved two PKs in the State Cup final - tall, athletic, and great hands. Some defenders that stand out in my mind: Alyssa Medina, Courtney Rice, Nikole Hollis and Sarah Zepeda. One of the best midfielders I ever coached was Alyssa Loveday, you could literally build a team around her. Another mid/forward was Mercedez Ray. She was great 1v1 and scored/created some great goals. Forward: Dez Reece, she scored 4 goals in one half vs. What do you do in spare time? In my spare time I enjoy playing with my kids, and spending time with my future wife Erin. What is your favorite food? Mexican Food (real Mexican food) Who is a coach you have worked with in the past who has left an impression on you and why? Several coaches have made an impact on me over the years. My first coach Jon DeVries, he taught me how to balance a practice so that it was challenging and fun. When I was younger, I went to a summer camp with George Logan. He was an amazing, patient, simple man who taught good soccer. Sami Nedjar has also been a huge part of the coach I am today, if you watch my sessions, you will find at least one exercise per practice that he has taught me. I also watch our United coaches at work, they have so many exercises to help teach the game that I often "borrow" their material, twist it a little and call it my own. What is your favorite movie? Although I have seen The Notebook over 100 times (jk), I would have to say 300 and The Departed. |
