December 2009 - United We Play

Message from the Club President

As we end our second Presidio season, I want to assure you that we are not sitting back but working very hard on improving the club even more for 2010. We are in a constant learning process and although we have experienced a lot of early success, we want to continue to strive towards excellence – from our staff to our volunteers, players and their families. We look forward to seeing many of you at our Holiday Camp (see details below). This month, we also are bringing back the very popular FREE Winter Skills clinics which are open to ALL players (not just UNITED) so invite your friends! (See details in the calendar and on the web site.) I want wish our older players the best as they embark on their high school season and look forward to their return in March for post-season training in preparation for State/National Cup.

United’s directors are diligently reviewing the coaches’ evaluations and determining staff for 2010. The staff will be posted well before 2010 tryouts so all players will know what coaches their age group will have. Tryouts will start in late January/early Feb for ages U8-U14 and in May for U15 and older. Players will be trying out for their 2010 playing ages. As soon as dates and locations are finalized, information will be posted on the club web site.

As we close out 2009 and look forward to 2010, I want to wish all of you the very best of holidays and quality family time. Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our United families.

Rebecca Dierdorff

Club President

Two Under-17 Black Players Commit to College Scholarships

Seniors Jasmine Bell and Danielle Ross have verbally committed to four-year schools for 2010.  Bell, a senior outside back at Steele Canyon High School, had interest from several schools including Kansas Wesleyan, Humboldt State and Lesley University. In the end, she accepted a scholarship offer from CSU San Bernardino where she hopes to help the Roadrunners up the ladder in the CCAA. Bell commented, "I'm very excited and looking forward to playing at CSU San Bernardino. Being able to play the game I love while continuing my education is a dream come true. I have been blessed and am thankful for all the support and guidance given to me by my family, friends and coaches."

Ross, a senior center back from Christian High was recruited by a number of schools including UC Riverside, CSU San Bernardino, Ole Miss and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Ross accepted an offer from Azusa Pacific and intends on competing for conference and national titles while at APU. "First off I would like to thank the team for preparing me to play college soccer,” said Ross. “I have been playing soccer since I was four and look forward to playing with Azusa Pacific's Women's Soccer Team in the fall." Best of luck to these girls as they head out to their respective high schools and hope that more of United’s players commit to four-year schools in the next few months.

College Prep Program News

With more exciting events for 2010, here’s a review the 2009 events from the club’s College Prep Program.

Three college nights were held and loads of information was disseminated. Topics ranged from developing a personal timeline for the college recruiting process, creating a player profile, transitioning between club/high school soccer and the college game, communicating with the college coach, and hearing from the college player’s perspective.

Additionally, 14 four-year colleges were visited throughout the year; 15 college coaches worked with United players at the College Prep Camp; and more than 150 United players and parents attended college games at UCSD, USD and SDSU! Stay tuned for the 2010 schedule of events. Announcements will be made in upcoming newsletters.

New High School Liaison Program produces positive results

United kicked off a new program just prior to the high school soccer season. First, a discussion on expectations for playing high school soccer was held in October at Steele Canyon High. About eight varsity soccer players were on hand to give insight to the club’s 8th - and 9th-graders. Players and parents were able to hear about the tryout process, academic requirements and the differing levels of play. They were also able to glance over questionnaires (with suggestions from several local high school coaches).

Here’s what some of the parent attending that night had to say: “Thank you for having the meeting. It was very informative. My son is very excited! The books with the ‘school-specific’ information were very helpful.”

“I thought your presentation was pretty comprehensive.”

“Thanks for doing this. I have an 8th-grader and it was very informative. It's also nice to hear from the high school kids.”

Finally, United’s coaching staff ran four combined workouts at Granite Hills High to prep all players for their respective high school tryouts. Word on the street is many of United’s players made their respective high school teams!

How did you get involved in coaching? At the age of 17, I started coaching by helping my dad coach my brother’s team.

What do you enjoy most about coaching? I enjoy watching player and team development and instilling a passion and love for the game of football (soccer).

What soccer player(s) do you like to watch? There are many players I enjoy watching, especially Messi, Torres, Gerrard, Terry, Xavi and Charlie Davies!

Who is your favorite soccer team? I have two: the U.S. National Team and Barcelona.

What is the most positive thing you have observed so far with San Diego United? Just knowing that we are only in our second year, a lot of people know us, and that we are a club that is always striving to get better!

What suggestions do you have for our youth soccer players? Nothing is given to you! You must earn all goals by hard work, commitment and dedication! Also, be passionate and have a love for the game!

Who are the most memorable players who played for you and why?

Every player I coach makes me better! So, I say all!

What do you do in spare time? Spare time? I enjoy the little time I have spending time with my wife Kristi, my little girl Addi, drawing and painting, and going to the gym.
